6 Facts of Life for an Unpaid DC Intern
1. You work more hours than you should. It sounds paradoxical, since you’re not actually receiving compensation for the hours you spend at your computer… well, not monetary compensation. You can’t put a value on experience, right?
2. You’ve experienced the Metro version of Murphy’s Law at least once in your first month, whereby your naive plans to arrive at work...

[STOLEN]
Camera was stolen by an enterprising baggage handler in Santiago, but that didn’t keep me from making some amazing memories before I hightailed back home for the holidays.
[Santiago] Reunion with EOD volunteers, which involved some roaming around Santiago, soaking up sun in the Plaza de Armas, and alcohol in the hostel. Visit to Londres 38 and the Museum of Memory and Human Rights, two...

Broke out some homemade Apples to Apples cards in primero medio today.

The winning card? “Barack Obama.”
Teaching in Chile? Priceless.

Long Weekends
Another long weekend, another rejuvenating break from the trials of ESL teaching in the desert. It wasn’t to anywhere new - just to La Serena/the Elqui Valley - but it was with different people and with different goals, which generally makes or breaks traveling.
I was with Marissa and the Rojas family (the most sustained example of genuine hospitality I’ve encountered in Chile),...

Weekend in Caldera
Weekend kicked off with some futbol practice at the turf stadium with the little chicas from my school, and I have to say, there are few other reasons I would miss Friday almuerzo (i.e. Nona’s incredible mote/lentils/garbanzo stews) for. There aren’t a whole ton of girls, but this ragtag group is always brimming with enthusiasm. What they lack in coordination - it’s safe to say...

You! You’re a terrible influence. Our PE teacher said we have to be more...
– Monsy, my host sister and her best friend Catalina.
Apparently, running past the PE class this morning wasn’t the best thing I did for the students… Oops?
